Do you want to maintain a strong and healthy smile? If so, you need to avoid the causes behind a cracked tooth. Unfortunately, there are many things that can crack your tooth enamel, so you need to keep an eye out. To help you, our dentist, Dr. Robert C. Freeman, is happy to list the culprits involved, which are:

-Chewing something hard: This could be anything like a piece of hard candy, a popcorn kernel, a jawbreaker, or an ice cube. Your teeth can also crack when you are using your teeth as tools, like to open a package or tear a label off a shirt or a pair of shoes. This applies pressure to the teeth and cracks the outer shell.

-A hard hit: Generally, hard hits to the mouth occur during a high-contact sport or activity, when you trip and fall, or when you take a spill on your bike. These cases usually result in oral injury, especially if you’re not wearing a mouthguard.

-Bruxism: Usually, people grind their teeth when they sleep. (Teeth grinding is another name for Bruxism). The habit applies pressure to the teeth, wears down the enamel, and damages it. If this is the cause for you, it’s best to wear a mouthguard while you rest to prevent further damage.
