If you wish to enhance your smile, it is essential to make sure you’re doing enough to keep your teeth free of any damage that can arise. One of the best ways for protecting your teeth against any plaque buildup or dental erosion is through oral hygiene routines such as brushing and flossing. Because brushes cannot adequately reach between teeth an interdental cleaning utensil such as dental floss will be needed to reach the areas that brushes cannot.
Because dental floss is such an extremely important utensil for your oral health care, it is important to make sure you’re not only using the right products, but you’re using the right techniques to ensure your flossing correctly. If you have any questions about which dental floss products to use, speak with your dentist about product recommendations and suggestions.
When selecting a dental floss, always look for the ADA Seal of Acceptance. The seal is given to products to ensure individuals are aware that the product has met the recommended standards for safety and effectiveness. In lieu of using dental thread, an alternative interdental cleaner such as a water flosser can also be used to clean between teeth.
If you decide on using threaded floss, make sure your product is shred-resistant. For each session, use a strand roughly 16” to 20“ in length that can be adequately used to clean between each and every tooth. Wrap a section of the strand around a finger on each hand but make sure it is loose enough that you can move up and down the strand as necessary. Never use the same section of a strand more than once between your teeth. In addition, never use the same strand for more than one flossing session.
